Joshua Rose Shepherd Huts - the best kept secret in the world of huts ...
We are a small family business in Devon that crafts a limited amount of beautiful bespoke huts.
Joshua Johansen is an award winning woodworker and furniture maker who ran a successful logging and woodworking business.
After moved to the bucolic Devon and Dorset boarder he decided to build his first hut after falling in love with their history, beauty and charm.
Shepherd Huts date back to the 16th century and by the 1800's the were a familiar sight in the fields of Britain. The original huts were used as shelter for Shepherds, particularly during lambing season. They had to be portable from field to field and had a modest interior which included a stove, a straw bed over an area in which lambs could be kept and a medicine area.
Every element of each hut is crafted by hand ...
Joshua takes inspiration from the original huts of old and adapting them for modern life. He is passionate about building huts that are both beautiful and practical for the intended use, be it a garden room, home office or holiday rental.
From welding the steel and shaping the oak for the chassis to crafting the windows, furniture and cabinetry, Joshua places upmost importance on crafting huts that will last for many years to come, using traditional joinery techniques and quality workmanship.
As well as shepherd huts we also make beautiful bespoke hand-crafted furniture, visit our page on Joshua Rose Woodwork for more information.
Striving to offer innovative solutions...
Whilst we take inspiration from the huts of old, we pride ourselves on offering clients innovative ideas and solutions to enhance their hut such as our new retractable deck (copyright of JoshuaRoseShepherdhuts). This is a hut first! The deck sits on top of the chassis when not in use and means that if you want to move the hut the deck simply moves with the hut. The deck mechanism means it slides out easily , with steel legs for additional support. The non-slip deck, complete with Oak and rope railings, ties in beautifully to the hut, making a very stylish outside seating area from which to enjoy the view.
